Time for a Pit Stop

Is time passing faster or am I just getting older?  Can it really be fall already?  I heard someone say the other day that he was trading his calendar for a stop watch.  I often feel like that scene I witnessed the other day as I channel surfed and came across a NASCAR race.  There was a camera mounted inside the car and the audience could view the fast paced movements as they happened.  Virtually everything in that TV camera was a blur.  Sometimes the producer would change the camera, giving viewers an idea of how life looks at it blows by at 200 miles an hour.  I didn’t have to watch that race to know that my life is lived at too fast a pace.  I live out the lines of the old pop song, “I’m in a hurry and I don’t know why.”

Today I have decided to slow down long enough to stop the blur.  I have decided not to just look, but to see.  I want to take the sound advice once offered by that famous philosopher Yogi Berra who said, “You can observe a lot just by watching.”  Just like those race car drivers who leave the track periodically for a pit stop, you and I need to do the same.  I am not talking about leaving the race, but taking time to make sure you can complete the race.  Take time to refuel, renew, refresh and recover so you can reenter the race and run with diligence.

The writer of Hebrews compared his life to a race with fans gathered to cheer him on.  His key to victory in his race (and I might add it is your key to victory in your race) is to keep his eyes on Jesus.  Listen to the way he described it, “Seeing we are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that does do easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto (and seeing) Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.”  Hebrews 12:1-2 KJV

Father, I need time to see you clearly.  I am not asking that you make time stand still.  I just want to be able to finish my race successfully. I admit that my life is weighed down with things that affect me daily.  There are sins, major and minor, that keep me from top efficiency.   Jesus, take the wheel and apply the brakes for me today.
