Three Little Words
Monday, April 29, 2013

by Dr. Gary Fisher, BHS director of church & faith relations

They are just three little words, but oh, how we love to hear them. They bring joy and anticipation to us every time they are spoken. For the most part they are our favorite words to hear. What words can bring that sort of excitement?

Some would say those “little” words would be, “I love you!” And at times those words are important for us to hear but more often they fall from insincere lips that fail to carry the full weight of their meaning. Others would contend to hear the one who has wronged you say, “I am sorry!” or “Please forgive me!” would be those long anticipated words. I agree sorrow and repentance are commendable emotions, but they too often come from insincere lips and fail to cover the pain and disappointment of many years.

So, what three little words reach down into our lives to elicit such feelings of joy?  From the first time I heard my mother say them – even to this very day I jump for joy when I hear “Supper is ready!” Isn’t it wonderful news that someone has prepared a meal for us?

After a hard day of physical, mental or emotional toil, isn’t it exciting to hear the words, “Supper is ready?” In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus paints a portrait of God that includes the brush strokes of Providence. God provides the daily needs of His children as we ask, “Give us this day our daily bread.” In a world of hunger and malnourishment the promise of the Psalmist continues to ring in our minds, “I have been young and now I am old, but I have never seen the righteous forsaken or his seed (children) begging for bread.” (Psalm 37:25).

Don’t let your current circumstances rob you of the anticipation of what our Father is able to provide you today! He is standing on the edge of eternity and is about to signal to all His children that it is time to join Him in that great time of perfect fellowship. He is about to say to you and to me, “Supper is ready!” Come and enjoy abundance in the perfect presence of people who are loved and forgiven. They are just three little words, but I am longing to hear them. I am listening for the call “Supper is ready!”

Father, we are weary from the toil of the day!  We are hungry for your presence.  Let your providence offer to us all that we need to live for You this day.  AMEN
