BIRMINGHAM, AL --- Each year Princeton BMC recognizes a nurse who stands out for nursing excellence. That nurse is the recipient of Princeton's Ida V. Moffett Nursing Excellence Award named in memory of Ida V. Moffett, who was known and respected by countless healthcare professionals as an excellent nurse and teacher.

Jennifer Chandler, RN, charge nurse, was named Princeton's 2012 winner during National Nurses Week and Hospital Week. Chandler, charge nurse on Princeton's 5 West oncology units and is a graduate of The University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing.

Jennifer was nominated for the Ida V. Moffett award by several colleagues and physicians because she models Ms. Moffett's "ideal attributes of a caring nurse" which include "treating the patient as the most important person in the hospital, building self-confidence in everyone and taking some of the patient's burden on yourself and transferring some of your own comfort and convenience to the one in need."

One nursing supervisor wrote in a nomination essay:

"Jennifer consistently displays exemplary behavior in her role as charge nurse. She does an outstanding job in managing a very busy nursing unit with instinctive actions which are calming and supportive to other staff....she consistently gives the needs of our patients and families the highest priority.

Her everyday actions have exemplified the ideal attributes of a caring nurse."

A physician wrote:

"...she always treats the patient as the most important person in the hospital. When I call to the unit for a patient assessment her nursing skills are outstanding... when there is any evaluation of a critically ill patient she is the go-to person. In all of my years working on the Oncology Unit at Princeton I have not found a young woman more dedicated to the nursing care of oncology patients than Jennifer. "

Jennifer lives in Mt. Olive and has been with Princeton BMC for 10 years.
