“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
John 16 is a part of Jesus’ farewell address to His disciples. He was preparing them (and us) for life without His physical presence. He knew that they would face frightening times but assured them they would never be alone. I find encouragement from this portion of Scripture because Jesus speaks clearly, compassionately and courageously about what life for believers is like. He declares that we can take heart, because the One who never fails, or falls short has defeated whatever may cause us distress.
There is so much in life that we cannot control. Life can be chaotic. Life can be uncertain. Life is fragile. Sometimes we forget how fragile life is. We get up in the morning excited about the possibilities of the day and never really know what is ahead. Our hope and peace come from Jesus’ promise to us: He has overcome the world!
Dear God, we can only make it through this day if You are with us. Our days are in Your hands. Although there are many things happening in life that are frightening or overwhelming, we know that Your power is greater than all of them. Give us wisdom, strength and ears to hear what You are saying in the midst of the noise. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
