Welcome from David Wilson, President of Shelby Baptist Medical Center
It is truly exciting to be part of Shelby Baptist Medical Center and the Shelby County area. As the only hospital in Alabama's fastest growing county, we have excellent opportunities as we grow to keep pace with the health care needs of the citizens of our area.
In 1959, community leaders established the 35 bed Shelby Memorial Hospital with the goal of bringing needed medical services to the area. Today, there is a new name and more than $120 million in capital improvements recently completed and/or currently underway. We have grown to 192 beds with a diversity of services that provide some of medicine's latest technologies and most innovative procedures to thousands of patients each year. Our exciting new construction projects include:
: Our new Emergency Department (ED) opened its doors in July 2006. This year, we plan for over 48,000 patients to come through our ED doors, making it one of the metro area's busiest. We have expanded our Level III trauma unit to meet the rising demand for experienced, urgent care close to home.
: With the growth in Shelby County comes the need for expanded Women's Services. We have doubled the size of our Women's Services to serve the needs of our growing community. Our new expansion also opened its doors in July 2006 and since that time we have had several record breaking delivery months in Shelby County! We have also added many upscale amenities to support our beautiful new birthing rooms including a prenatal education area, lactation center, spacious family waiting area, women's diagnostic area, mother/baby gift shop and Outtakes quick cuisine.
Expansion of Cardiovascular Services: Our Cardiovascular Services at Shelby Baptist Medical Center continue to grow. In February 2007, we expanded our capabilities to serve our community through the addition of a new Invasive Cardiology Suite. Our three cardiac catheterization labs offer leading edge diagnostic and treatment services for heart related problems.
Construction of the South Tower/100 New Patient Rooms: The South Tower at Shelby Baptist is the largest construction project in the history of the hospital. This new 167,712 square foot, five story bed tower will offer all private patient rooms as well as new ancillary services at the hospital. The completion date for this $85 million project was November 2009.
Shelby Baptist Medical Center is proud to be a part of the Baptist Health System. The Baptist Health System has provided great support for our hospital and community by funding these projects which allow us to provide state-of-the-art technologies and new facilities to our patients.
On behalf of Shelby Baptist Medical Center and Baptist Health System, we see a great future for Shelby County. We are dedicated to a faith-based ministry that answers the health care needs of this community -- now and in the future. You can rely on Shelby Baptist Medical Center. Our goal is to continue "answering the call" in meeting the health care needs of you and your family with competence, caring and compassion.
May God Bless You,
David C. Wilson
