New Patients Information

"He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless.... those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint."  Isaiah 40:29, 31

Shelby Baptist Medical Center offers four outpatient services that include physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. All of Shelby Baptist Medical Center's therapists are manually trained. Patients are scheduled every 30 - 45 minutes rather than the traditional 20 minutes to give patients and therapists more time to work together.

Physical therapy at Shelby is available at all four locations. Our therapists treat all common diagnosis from post-op care to injuries on the job. There is a therapeutic pool at both YMCAs which is good for strengthening arthritis patients as well as post-op patients. We focus on manual therapy techniques when needed but with our partnerships with the YMCAs in Greystoneand Pelham, we have full access to new and progressive exercise equipment. We provide high quality care and focus on the individual patient. Patients are scheduled for a full 60 minute evaluation slot and then follow-up visits are 30 minute slots. This allows our therapist to spend quality, one on one time with our patients.

Speech Therapy

Both inpatient and outpatient Speech Therapy services are provided here at Shelby Baptist.  Inpatient services include completing bedside swallow evaluations and when necessary a Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) to assess for oropharyngeal dysphagia in patients who have suffered from a stroke or have a neurological impairment. Least restrictive diet recommendations are then made to ensure safety with intake. Patients are provided dysphagia treatment to address oral and pharyngeal strengthening via exercises and instruction. Vital Stim is also utilized to promote swallowing through the application of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) to the swallowing muscles with goals to strengthen and reeducate the muscles and improve motor control of the swallowing mechanism.  Speech language evaluations are performed to develop an appropriate plan of care for aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia, and dementia. NICUbabies are treated for suck, swallow, breathe coordination secondary to prematurity or inadequate labial seal to improve intake and encourage growth and development.

Outpatients are scheduled following a referral received from a physician. Outpatient services are provided to all age levels servicing developmental delay, language acquisition, articulation impairments and fluency in children. Adult and elderly patients can be scheduled for an outpatient MBS and then scheduled for dysphagia therapy as warranted. Stroke rehabilitation is provided as well as treatment for speech and swallowing impairments caused by Parkinson's, Myasthenia Gravis, Brain Tumor removal and many other diagnoses. Another area of treatment is head and neck cancer patients who have, or are about to undergo a Laryngectomy. Education is provided before surgery regarding what to expect, changes in anatomy, and options for voice restoration following removal of the voice box. After surgery patients can learn to speak intelligibly with an electrolarynx, utilize esophageal speech, or Tracheoesophageal Puncture (TEP).

To schedule an appointment, a doctor's referral should be faxed to any of the above facilities. A Rehab Services employee will contact the patient or the referring doctor's office can call to schedule an appointment for the patient over the phone.
