ALABASTER, AL --- Shelby Baptist Medical Center held the official ribbon cutting ceremony for the $92 million South Tower Project on Wednesday, November 18th at 2:00 p.m. The South Tower Project consists of a new 167,712 square foot bed tower to replace 101 existing licensed beds and space for ancillary services. With the opening of this unit, the facility which is licensed for 192 beds, will convert to an all private patient room facility.
"In 2005, a master plan was created to focus on the renovation and expansion of our facility. Since that time, we have completed several different phases of this plan by opening a new ER, a new Women's Center and a new Heart Catherization Lab. Most recently we expanded our operating rooms and now the opening of the South Tower completes another phase of this plan. This project combines the latest technology, patient comforts and family friendly conveniences in the area's most modern healthcare facility," said David Wilson, Shelby Baptist President and CEO.
The 101 replacement beds, of which 16 are ICU beds, will enable Shelby Baptist to remove outdated patient rooms from service and create all private inpatient rooms. The new South Tower consists of four new floor levels built atop the newly constructed Emergency Department, which opened July 2006.
The new bed tower begins on the second floor and contains a clinical laboratory with a private donor room, central sterilization and reprocessing area to support the newly expanded operating rooms, admitting/registration area, chapel, public space and mechanical space. A new covered patient pick up and drop off area, just off the admitting area and South Tower main lobby, is also included in the newly constructed area.
The third floor consists of 50 medical/surgical private rooms. The fourth floor houses 35 routine medical/surgical private rooms in an Intermediate Care Unit and 16 private Medical ICU beds in a new Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU). The fifth floor is shelled for future expansion. In addition to the new South Tower, a 15,000 square foot Central Energy Plant with state of the art, energy efficient equipment, and a 370 space parking deck have also been constructed. The South Tower features high tech equipment and is WIFI throughout.
"This is the biggest single development in the history of healthcare in Shelby County. The opening of the South Tower begins a whole new era in healthcare for our surrounding communities," said Wilson.
